Gogan Shinji Bamboo Splitting Festival

Gogan Shinji Bamboo Splitting Festival

A daring festival where young men beat and split bamboos at the Sugo Isobe Jinja Shrine. This Festival is derived from a legend that evil spirits were scared away from the sound of bamboo splitting when Emperor Tenmu was praying to expel plagues and for good harvest. It is believed that the split bamboos can protect one from sickness and disasters. Many visitors would try to get their hands on these bamboos and take it home with them.
