Shinise Museum (Old Merchant House)

This building originally belonged to a pharmacist "Nakaya Yakuho", founded in 1579. The building was moved to its present location and the exterior was preserved. On the 1st floor, there are various rooms such as "Mise no Ma", "Oe no Ma". Mise no Ma houses a traditional medicine chest called 'kusuri-tansu' while Oe no Ma has a splendid latticed ceiling (kumi-tenjo). The tea ceremony room and traditional Japanese room recreate the scenery of merchant houses in feudal times. The 2nd floor is like an exhibition room which introduces the culture of the townspeople through the display of daily utensils, wedding decoration, etc., thanks to the cooperation of 60 Shinise* shops from Kanazawa. *A Shinise shop is a shop with long standing and reputation.
