The Natadera Temple is the head temple of the Shingon Sector and was established
in A.D.717 by Priest Taicho. With cedar tress and camellias over few hundred years
old inside this 70,000-tsubo (about 231,000 m2) area, Toshitsune Maeda, the 3rd
lord of the Kaga Clan, built the incense burning pavilion, 3-story pagoda, the
bell tower, the study room and rebuilt the main shrine, which was designated as
one of the important cultural asset of Ishikawa Prefecture. One will be filled
with awe just by visiting all these constructions one after another. Even the
famous poet Basho Matsuo had paid a visit here and left a haiku behind. Magnificent
scenery of strangely formed rocks that are said to be the remains from ancient
volcanic eruptions undersea is a must-see, and this temple is also famous for
viewing beautiful autumn foliages. |

The head shrine of more than 3000 Shirayama shrines in Japan, this shrine is dedicated
to the sacred Mt. Hakusan as the mountain of faith. The locals are exceptionally
familiar with the shrine and have been calling it "Shirayama-san". Following the
long flights of stone steps, you will then enter the trail with 1000-year-old
cedar tress and Hiba Arborvitals on its sidewalks, giving out a solemn feel to
the whole precinct of the shrine. Within the precinct there is a treasure hall
that contains many items including designated important cultural assets. Dedicated
to the Shirayama Hime Daijin, it is said to give good fortune especially to those
asking for a good harvest, a good relationship and good future in business/occupation. |
